SIR – It appears that the road laws don’t apply to certain members of the driving community.
On numerous occasions I have witnessed cars driving on the pavement on Mayo Avenue towards the petrol station at Staygate Roundabout just after coming off the motorway. It appears the main culprits are the residents of the new housing development that has been built next to the petrol station, who don’t want to take the normal route, which would take a few extra minutes out of their time.
Just the other day, at 6.45pm, I saw a car being driven along the pavement and some children having to jump out of the way.
I contacted the Council and suggested putting some bollards up. They said they would have to get funding and planning permission and this can take quite some time.
They also suggested I contact the police, which I did by e-mail, and I am still awaiting a response after more than a week.
As a concerned member of the public, I want to see the Council act to ensure the safety of the public, especially as there is a primary school located across the road and no doubt the pavement is used by the children and their parents.
