THIS is an old Skipton photo of Lower Commercial Street which is long gone.
The picture is thought to have been taken around 1960 and shows a number of residential homes as well as shops. The one on the left we are told used to be a greengrocers while the one on the right was a bakery.
In the background is the former old fire station and the large doors can be seen. This building still remains though is in use as commercial premises.
The corner of the former Commercial pub can just be seen on the left in the foreground.
Today no trace of Lower Commercial Street remains as it is home to a car park run by Craven District Council.
Fortunately we still have evidence of what used to be in the town with a series of old photographs.
This has been reproduced by kind permission of the Ellwood family, Mrs V Rowley, North Yorkshire County Council and Skipton library.
