THE village of West Marton, near Skipton, was the scene of police and army interest on Saturday morning following the discovery by a builder of what was believed to be an unexploded Second World War bomb in the garden of a property undergoing restoration.

Police received a call at just after 11am, made sure everyone in the village was safe, and contacted the Army Explosive Ordnance Team which arrived just more than two hours later, confirmed it was an empty device and took it away.

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police said: “Police were called by a builder working in West Marton at about 11.15 am on Saturday (March 21) who found a suspected mortar flare in a shed in the back garden of an empty property.

“Officers attended to ensure everyone the village was safe, and contacted the Army Explosive Ordnance Team (EOD) team to assist.

“At 1.40pm the EOD team arrived at the scene, confirmed it was an empty device, and removed it. “
