THIS week’s memory lane walk takes us along Keighley Road, in Skipton, which looks very different from today.
The photographs are reproduced by kind permission of the Ellwood family, Mrs V Rowley, North Yorkshire County Council and Skipton Library.
Particularly poignant is the game dealers/butchers with the birds hanging outside the shop. We are presuming most of them are geese as turkey didn’t become popular as a Christmas meal until much later.
H Lister’s newsagents business is another busy photograph with more posters and bill boards than we see nowadays.
It was a much slower pace of life in those days with streets almost devoid of traffic and people going about their business on foot. We suspect the photographer had no idea how interesting his pictures would become.
