SKIPTON Auction Mart’s rescheduled winter sale of working sheep dogs on Friday, November 1, has attracted a record seasonal entry of 163, comprising 98 broken dogs and 65 in the unbroken pen.

Vendors will, as usual, be represented from across England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland, with some exceedingly well-bred dogs again among the entry. Because of the shorter days and high entry, both vendors and potential buyers are asked to note that the sale will have an earlier start at 8am prompt.

There’s more weekend auction action this Saturday, with the monthly livestock collective sale supplemented by two new pedigree fixtures for both cattle and sheep.

First up is the inaugural sale for Hereford females, with a show class for the best haltered heifer, followed by a special winter show and sale for 52 Suffolk females, with show classes for in-lamb ewes and shearling ewes, plus ewe lambs, from which a champion and supreme champion will emerge.

Catalogues for all the above can be viewed online at www.ccmauctions.com

Late season gimmer lambs.

Skipton’s fourth fortnightly Tuesday sale of gimmer lambs held on October 22 attracted 2,107 head.

While trade was not as buoyant as seen at the third sale, the turnout was a far more seasonal selection, representing most vendors’ final round-up of lambs for this year.

Better lambs sold in the £70s, the best runners in the £60s, middle types of runners either side of £60 and smaller end or commercial sorts generally in the early to mid £50s.

An overall sale average of £60.39 per head was recorded. North of England Mules averaged £60.39, Masham £61.97 and Lleyn £66.75.

A sale of hill rams saw a nice selection forward, the better end making 200-300gns, this for a Cheviot aged ram. The fifth and final gimmer lamb sale of 2019 is on Wednesday, November 13.
