INGLETON is well on its way to securing an upgrade of its multi use games area thanks to the stoic fundraising of a local group.

Just £5,000 remains of an original target of £60,000 so work can begin on the site next to the sports field situated behind the community centre.

A volunteer group consisting of members of the Ingleton Rural Community Association, Ingleton Sports Management Committee, and local sport clubs have taken action to upgrade the popular games area. Plans involve resurfacing the playing area (to 3G) and constructing a small maintenance storage unit near the site entrance.

The group is in talks with three FA approved suppliers, with its preferred supplier expected to be selected this month.

The installation is forecast to start in September.

The Ingleton community boasts comparatively high participation rates in exercise and physical activity, much of which can be accredited to the ongoing work of dedicated local volunteers who run outdoor events and sports clubs. To continue meeting these increasing demands, the group says opportunities to maintain active lifestyles across all age groups need to be secured within the local area.

One of the organisers, David McGonnigal, said: “The current surface is long past its use-by date. It is hard, it gets waterlogged and slippery and it urgently needs replacing.

“A new 3G surface will be easier on the joints due to a rubber shock pad. It will drain water away, and will have a maintenance plan agreed with the supplier to keep it in top condition.”

The existing MUGA area is used by several local football clubs, with membership of over 150 players. It will also be used by several local sports clubs, schools, businesses and individuals. These include ladies’ football, walking football, and senior and junior football clubs.

A fundraising page has been started to help people donate to the ongoing fundraising. Anyone wishing to donate or to get more information should go to: https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/Ingleton3GMUGA

The fundraising page is open until June 30.
