Images of the Medieval jetton found in Rylstone
A MEDIEVAL jetton which was found by a metal detectorist near Rylstone has been declared as treasure at an inquest.
The silver coin-shaped object, described as a counter used for reckoning - suggested as being similar to a pocket calculator of the Middle Ages - measured 20mm in diameter and weighed 7.03 grammes.
Assistant coroner for North Yorkshire, Jonathan Heath, said the British Museum had described the find, unearthed by metal detecting enthusiast in July 2017, as an unusual item and dated it from 1350 to 1450.
It contained around 80 per cent silver and bore the image of a shield with four diamond shapes each featuring a fleur de lys but no inscription on either side.
Mr Heath recorded the piece as treasure.
