WHARFEDALE schoolchildren are celebrating musical success.

Young singers headed to Colne, in Lancashire, to take part in the Luther Greenwood Festival of Song. Among them were three pupils from Westville House School in Ilkley - Evie Marsden, Summer Brown and Grayson Chamley.

Evie came second in the Songs from the Shows (up-to-12 years old) category and won the overall trophy for Most Promising Singer. Summer was third in her age section of the Songs from the Shows class while Grayson was first in Vocal Solo for up-to-12, winning the John Whittle Trophy.

Quillian Andre from All Saints’ C of E Primary School in Ilkley and Evie Connor, from St Mary’s School, Menston also excelled. Quillian was third in the Vocal Solo for up-to-12 and won the Songs from the Shows section for that age group. Evie, 11, came first in the Folk Song (up-to-16) category and was second in the up-to-16 group of the Vocal Solo class.

Peripatetic music teacher at Westville House Kirsten van Terheyden accompanied the children to the event.
She said: "The festival is a fantastic opportunity for young musicians to gain experience and confidence."
