COUNCILLORS are backing plans to look at extending the proposed Wharfedale Greenway through Ben Rhydding and Ilkley.

Ilkley Parish Council agreed to support in principle, but not financially, further feasibility studies and development work on the section of greenway through Ben Rhydding and Ilkley.

At its meeting this week the council also resolved to set up a working group including councillors, the town clerk and co-opted non-councillors to make progress on developing the proposals.

Former Ilkley councillor Brian Mann told the meeting Leeds Council was hopefully committed to the project and there was no reason to doubt that Bradford council would get behind it if Ilkley decided to go ahead with it.

Cllr Pauline Allon told the meeting the time was right to get people out of their cars and to get them cycling.

Planning permission for the first stage of the Wharfedale Greenway - linking Otley to Burley - is expected to be in place by next summer. The scheme involves turning a disused railway line into a walking and cycling route connecting Pool-in-Wharfedale, Otley, Burley and and Menston.
