Baildon was the scene for a showdown between two generations of a celebrity family last night, all while the TV cameras were rolling.

Chart-topping singer Sophie Ellis Bextor and her mum, former Blue Peter presenter Janet Ellis, surprised people looking to bag a bargain when they showed up at the weekly sale at Halfway Auctions on Otley Road.

The pair were there to wrap up filming of an episode of Celebrity Antiques Road Trip. For several weeks they have been travelling the UK, aided by antique experts, choosing quirky items to sell at last night’s auction. The goal was to make as much profit as possible, with the proceeds going towards Children In Need.

Philip Chester, owner of the business, had mentioned on the auction house’s website that there would be some filming, but those in attendance had no idea who would be showing up until the pair walked in.

Although competitors, the celebrity pair said they often forgot they were meant to be in competition. Sophie said: “We’ve been getting the items from Essex and Southend, it’s quite funny seeing them go to auction.”

Sitting in the sun outside the auction house, she said: “It is the perfect day to come here, my step dad is from Huddersfield so we used to come up around here a lot when I was younger.

“This show is probably the first thing we have done like this where we’re competing, but we’re both raising money for a good cause. I’ve seen what she’s picked and there are some really nice items. I’m really not confident of winning, but it was good fun.”

Janet added: “It has been lovely taking part. The experts have been very helpful. You’d think it would be easy for a woman to spend £400. I’m not too confident how the items will do, it is a challenging market.

“We keep forgetting we’re supposed to be in competition, but it has been a great chance to spend time together.”

The episode will air in October.
