THE roof of a Grade II listed mill will be getting a modern makeover after plans to install solar panels were approved.

Legrams Mill on Legrams Lane is one of Bradford’s best-preserved mills, and is home to a restaurant and banqueting hall.

Plans to turn an upper floor of the building into flats were recently approved, and this work would involve repairing the building’s roof.

Earlier this year Browntree Properties applied to instal 130 solar panels on the roof as part of this work.

The application said the work would “ensure the longevity of the Mill and to mitigate against the ever-rising cost of the utilities.”

The application has now been approved by Bradford Council.

Plans to include 'managed accommodation' in redevelopment of derelict Bradford building are scrapped

Planning officers said: “Energy generating products such as solar panels contribute to the environmental sustainability aims of the National Planning Policy Framework and have some public benefit.

“Taking the design proposed and considering that no physical harm will arise to the fabric of the building, the impact on this asset would not be significant and the slight harm to its appearance is considered to be significantly outweighed by the public benefits.”

The Lockwood and Mawson designed, steam-powered worsted mill was built in the 1870s.
