LIBRARY campaigners have erected several Christmas trees at Darlington's historic Crown Street Library.

The Friends of Darlington Libraries were inspired by the film The Twelve Trees of Christmas, which follows a community's efforts to save its demolition-threatened library. They decorated 12 trees and have placed them around the facility, where they complement those provided by the library.

The campaign group worked for more than two years to protect Crown Street from closure and, now it has been saved, say they will continue their now annual tradition of erecting the trees in celebration of the news and to "encourage people to call in at the library and enjoy the many activities on offer."

Chair Yvonne Richardson urged people to visit the exhibition currently on display there, which focuses on pictures of Darlington at Christmas. On Saturday, there will be a series of festive events at the library, including a performance by the Darlington Choral Society between 10am and 11am.
