KEIGHLEY’S planned new multi-million pound police station is moving a step closer.
The purchase of the town-centre site from Bradford Council was said this week to be “advancing”.
It was announced in 2019 that the new police station would be built on the site of the now-demolished former college premises in Cavendish Street.
The news was welcomed at the time by community leaders, who said the move would be a boost for the town and the fight against crime. Originally it was hoped the scheme would be complete by the spring of this year.
Mark Burns-Williamson, West Yorkshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner, said this week: “The purchase of the Keighley town-centre site for the police station is advancing.
“We’re now working through plans with the council to make sure we can fully maximise site options to provide the required facilities.”
And a Bradford Council spokesman told us: “We’re pleased to be working with the police to support them in the development of this site. Having a significant staffed office base for the police in the heart of Keighley can only benefit the town.”
The police station was situated in North Street prior to the present Royd Ings Avenue site opening in 2005.
