A NEW book providing an insight into the militant activities of the suffragettes was launched at Haworth yesterday.

Jack Joslin – author of A is for Arson: A Suffragette Alphabet of Rebellion & Resistance – and artist Cat Crossley, the illustrator, signed copies

The launch event – at gift shop Wave of Nostalgia – was held with full Covid-19 safety measures in place, including social distancing and the wearing of face coverings.

"It was certainly not the norm for a launch!” said Jack.

“Safety comes first and Diane, who owns and runs Wave of Nostalgia, put in a one-way system and ensured the event was a success.

"Cat and I had a wonderful time signing books and meeting people. Even with everyone wearing a mask, you could still recognise those with a rebellious spirit from the fire in their eyes!"

Publisher Clavis & Claustra says the fully-illustrated A is for Arson: A Suffragette Alphabet of Rebellion & Resistance tells the story of the suffragettes in an engaging and humorous way, with a focus on their militant activities – and from an inter-sectional feminist perspective. Each letter of the alphabet depicts an element of the suffragettes’ rebellion.

The book is aimed at the adult gift market but is also suitable for young adults and older children.

Priced £7.99, it is available from all good bookshops.
