NEW trains introduced by Northern – which operates services on the Airedale line – have clocked-up a milestone.

They have covered more than five million miles since their launch a year ago.

Ninety-five of the Class 195 diesels and Class 331 electric trains are now in passenger service, as part of a £500 million investment. And the number is expected to exceed 100 by the end of this year.

Steve Hopkinson, Northern’s regional director, said: “It’s fantastic that our new trains have already travelled so many miles, giving millions of customers a better service than ever before.

“Our fleet of new trains is now calling at 140 stations across the network – we’re proud that so many people are able to enjoy a step-change in travelling experience.”

The trains feature free Wi-Fi, air conditioning and at-seat power and customer information.

Mr Hopkinson said the company was also refurbishing its existing fleet of 268 trains and improving stations. “I would like to recognise the efforts of everyone who has worked – in often challenging circumstances – to get us to this point,” he added.
