INDEPENDENT traders in Keighley are being supported by an online Street Market set up during the coronavirus lockdown.

Catherine Simes set up the Facebook page for businesses across Bradford district struggling following the closure of their physical shops.

Many of the 200-plus shops signed up to the service are shops who did not have their own websites or Facebook pages and could no longer reach customers.

Independent shops in Keighley on the Street Market include Grind and Groove record shop, Art for Soles shoe customisation service, crafts and curio shop The Kindred Bizarre, and Anna Gouws Artwork.

The Street Market grew out of a blog by Catherine called ‘Take the Girl out of Bradford’, after she realised many independent retailers were struggling to survive following lockdown.

She realised there was a potential captive audience with people being at home and unable to shop normally.

The Bradford Street Market is a Facebook group that ‘opens’ from 9am to 4pm every Thursday.

Retailers, from established shops to individual crafters, can have a ‘stall’ on the market each week in the form of a Facebook post to display their wares.

Catherine said some of the 'stallholders' believed the Facebook page had helped their businesses survive in recent weeks.

She said: “Shoppers have really enjoyed discovering new local businesses – there’s an army of talented Bradford makers, artists and producers out there and we’re unearthed some real hidden gems, bringing them together in one place for the first time.

"The variety and quality of products available has really showcased the best of Bradford’s independents. It’s also encouraged people to change the way they do business, moving online and even offering delivery services.

“We’ve worked hard to create a positive, market-style atmosphere in the group and it’s brought a bit of fun and community to Thursdays in Bradford, some saying it’s the highlight of their week!

"People seem to have a real appetite to support local businesses. My hope is that this support will continue after the lockdown and people will appreciate the value of backing local businesses and keeping money in the local economy."

The Street Market, which has now been open for more than 10 weeks, is continuing despite the reopening of many shops this month.

Keighley shops taking part also include East Morton soap shop Magnifiscents and Soaps, Puppy Tailor from Haworth which sells handmade pet accessories and treats, artist Anji Timlin, and Haworth vintage goods shop Wave of Nostalgia.
