ON behalf of Keighley Trades Union Council, I wish to thank the Keighley News for the strong editorial support for all the key workers during this pandemic.

Particular thanks go to your support for health sector workers on the issue of protective personal equipment for those at Airedale Hospital working in this time of crisis – and also to the general public in showing its appreciation by participating in the 'clap for carers' each Thursday evening.

But, this welcome recognition of health workers cannot and must not be merely a temporary and transient recognition. When this crisis is behind us, we need a long-term recognition of the benefits that we all derive from the efforts of workers in the public services.

Health service worker delegates attending Keighley Trades Union Council have highlighted one issue that is of particular concern to staff at Airedale Hospital – that of staff car parking charges whilst at work. At present, during the coronavirus crisis, all parking charges have been suspended for staff, patients and visitors. But this was applied for just 12 weeks from March 24 – and there appears to be no further extension to this period, presumably meaning that after June 16 charges will apply again.

Whilst the management at Airedale Hospital have recognised the importance of trade union representations about the issue of the cost of car parking charges to staff and their submissions to have these charges waived, they have been intransigent in moving to abolish these charges over several years, which has angered many of the staff.

Therefore Keighley Trades Union Council believes that the permanent suspension of staff car parking charges is needed as soon as possible. If these charges are not warranted in a time of crisis then they are not justified at any time. This will be a simple and low-cost way to show appreciation for these key workers and resolve a long-standing concern.
