ROYAL Mail says it was "shocked and saddened" at the alleged shooting of one of its workers in Keighley.

A postwoman was injured while doing her rounds in Spring Bank Rise on Wednesday afternoon, by what was believed to be a shot from an air rifle or pistol.

The 52-year-old was taken to hospital suffering from facial injuries. She has since been discharged following treatment.

Police have been studying images from CCTV cameras in the area and are appealing for witnesses, or anyone with information, to come forward.

The incident happened at about 1.30pm.

Two people, an 18-year-old man and a juvenile, were arrested and bailed as part of the ongoing investigation.

Royal Mail says it has a zero-tolerance approach to any form of abuse against its staff and that it is working with the police to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and identify whoever was responsible.

Postal deliveries in the Spring Bank Rise area have been temporarily suspended.

A spokesman for the company said: "Royal Mail was shocked and saddened to learn of this incident.

"We are thankful that our colleague was not more seriously injured and wish her a speedy recovery.

"We're now assisting the police with their enquiries.

"Royal Mail has zero-tolerance to any form of abuse against our staff.

"As a result of this incident, all deliveries to Spring Bank Rise Keighley were suspended with immediate effect.

"Suspending deliveries is a last resort. However, our first priority as an employer is to ensure the welfare and safety of our people.

"Customers who are unable to collect mail from their local delivery office will be offered alternative arrangements until we can safely resume deliveries.

"We urge customers to contact the police with any information that might support their investigation."

West Yorkshire Police say the postwoman's injuries were consistent with being sustained from an air weapon.

And they confirmed investigations into the incident were ongoing.

A spokesman said: "Any witnesses or anyone with information is asked to contact the non-emergency number 101 quoting reference 1096 of 03/06, or Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555 111."
