KEIGHLEY householders are being urged to be on their guard against “opportunistic” thieves.

Latest claims data produced by Co-op Insurance shows that nearly 40 per cent of burglaries are committed by opportunist criminals.

And it has been found that two-fifths of all thefts from homes occur in the period after the clocks go forward. The clocks go forward one hour this weekend.

Co-op Insurance says that although people are currently spending more time in their homes, due to the coronavirus restrictions, householders should remain vigilant and not relax their security.

Tips include store equipment used for work – such as computers and tablets – in a safe space and out of sight when not in use, keep windows and doors locked as much as possible – particularly in rooms that aren’t being occupied – and don’t allow people you do not know to gain access without checking their ID.

Caroline Hunter, for Co-op Insurance, said: “There’s a misconception that houses won’t be targeted when they’re occupied and so we’re doing what we can to encourage people to remain vigilant, to help keep homes and communities safe.”
