KEIGHLEY Big Local hopes to help older people combat "the most depressing day of the year" with a social afternoon on Saturday January 18.

The regeneration group is funding the buffet, dance and sing along from 2pm to 4pm at the Shoulder of Mutton in Thwaites.

Oakworth duo Adare, made up of singers Adele and Renato, will perform rock 'n' roll and 'swing country' music, and there will also be bingo.

Big Local coordinator Shaun O'Hare said the event was suggested by Big Local Partnership member Kelly Turner because there was a slight underspend on the group's projects budget.

He thanked Shoulder of Mutton landlord Nigel Mathews for providing the venue because there were a few community spaces in the Thwaites and Parkwood area.

Mr O'Hare said: "Apparently January 24 is the most depressing day of the year. Big Local is doing its bit to lift spirits and provide an opportunity to meet neighbours, build relationships and carry on the Christmas party.

"There will be a chance to chat and share information on groups and services active in the area, and opportunity for grants and support to provide more activities like this."

Mr Mathews, Shoulder of Mutton landlord for the past five years, said: "We pride ourselves on being a friendly welcoming public house. Pop on down and we will make you very welcome."
