There are dangerous episodes with the likes of local criminal Bill Sykes, and tenderness from Bill’s girlfriend Nancy, and hope the shape of well-to-do Mr Brownlow and the truth about the orphan boy’s origins.

Oliver Twist or the Parish Boy’s Progress is Charles Dickens’s second novel, and was first published as a serial in 1837–39.
