THE MAIN road into Keighley from Riddlesden had to be closed for almost two hours on Monday evening due to flooding.

Police were called to Bradford Road at Stockbridge following reports that a pipe had burst and water was surging through cracks in the road.

The road became impassable next to the chip shop. Police cars blocked the road at both ends and diversions were put in place.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said the burst pipe was reported at 5.48pm. Yorkshire Water engineers isolated the fault, and the road was reopened at 7.41pm.

Local man Steve Vink said the road was closed between Royd Ings Avenue and Athol Street.

He said: “Water built up on the road since early afternoon, and continued rising from under the surface at the pedestrian crossing alongside Aireworth Road.

“The tarmac was lifted in several places, and the road rose in some places while subsiding in others. The structural damage was straddling both sides of the road.”
