KEIGHLEY Soroptimists learned about the work of the Gambian Schools Trust.
Kath Davy – pictured right, with Soroptimists secretary Julia Allan – described to members how the small charity had been set-up in 2001 to help improve education for young children in poor, often-remote areas of The Gambia.
She visited the country herself in February to see what had been done so far.
The trust has provided or facilitated five nursery/primary schools catering for 850 pupils, 11 libraries, seven handpump wells and two solar-powered wells. It has also provided fully-equipped computer rooms at senior schools.
Goods bought through donations are shipped out by the trust every October.
