KEIGHLEY councillor Doreen Lee will be formally installed as the new Lord Mayor of Bradford tomorrow.

The ceremony will take place as part of Bradford Council's annual meeting.

Cllr Lee, who represents Keighley East, was nominated for the role by Labour group colleagues.

The Keighley-born grandmother-of-five, who has served on the council for 13 years, said she was "hugely proud and excited" to be put forward for the post.

"It’s a real honour and I can’t wait to get going and start promoting good causes and fantastic events across this wonderful district," she added.

Cllr Lee is a volunteer director of Keighley Asian Women and Children’s Centre and a member of Faith and Light, a Christian association which helps adults with learning difficulties and their families and friends.

During her year in office, she will raise money for Child Bereavement UK and Pot of Gold.

Cllr Lee takes over as Lord Mayor from another Keighley councillor, Zafar Ali.

The new Deputy Lord Mayor is Manningham councillor, Shabir Hussain, who has also served on the council for 13 years.

He said: "I'm honoured to have this opportunity.

"I will work extremely hard in the role and I've no doubt I will thoroughly enjoy the experience."

Council leader, Cllr Susan Hinchcliffe, welcomed the nominations.

"Both councillors are passionate about serving their respective wards and work tirelessly for their constituents," she added.

"Having worked with them both for a number of years, I know that they will meet the challenges of the Lord Mayor’s office positively and make these civic roles their own."

Child Bereavement UK offers a range of support to families and educates professionals when a baby or child dies or is dying, or when a youngster is facing bereavement.
