MORE THAN half a million pounds will be spent on road resurfacing in the Keighley constituency this year.

Keighley Area Committee has approved a priority list of roads in Keighley, Ilkley and surrounding villages that most need resurfacing or less-expensive ‘surface dressing’.

Bradford Council this year has a highways maintenance budget of £8.7 million, including a one-off £2.7m boost from the Government, to spend on roads, highway structures and street lighting across the district.

The council has set aside £1.3m for the resurfacing of A, B and C classified and non-classified roads throughout the district, including £378,000 for non-classified roads in the Keighley constituency.

In total, the council will spend £300,000 resurfacing non-classified roads in the Keighley constituency, and a further £250,000 on surface dressing 17,144m of roads.

A council spokesman said: “It is essential that local highway maintenance continues to be prioritised, reflecting the economic and social importance to communities and the need to safeguard the largest single local public asset.

“As such, the allocation is to be prioritised on those roads in most need of maintenance. Varying types of classifications of roads are surveyed annually using standardised survey and video equipment.”
