AN underground electrical fire cut power to 772 homes and businesses in Keighley.

Emergency services were first called to a fire at a manhole cover in Dalton Lane, shortly after 5pm yesterday. (April 16)

A spokesman for Northern Powergrid spokeswoman confirmed there was a fault on the electricity network at this location.

She added: "At 5.21pm we received a call from the Fire Brigade asking for our attendance on Dalton Lane, following reports of an underground fire.

"Our teams worked to quickly isolate the faulted section of cable.

"Power was restored to all our customers by 6.40pm by switching the network around to deliver power from an alternative part of the network.

"We’d like to thank our customers for their patience while our teams worked to get their lights back on, and we reassure them that incidents like this are not a common occurrence."

A West Yorkshire Fire Service spokesman said one fire engine was called to the scene, with the crew remaining until just before 6.30pm.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said officers cordoned off part of Dalton Lane, near its junction with Worth Bridge Road, closing it off to vehicles from 5.15pm to 7.30pm.
