MOVES to tackle vandalism in Wilsden have received a boost.

The parish council has been awarded a £517 grant to help pay for a street lamp at an entrance to the park.

The project is among 57 from across West Yorkshire to receive a share of over £250,000 in the latest round of awards from the Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Safer Communities Fund.

Wilsden parish councillor Jane Callaghan said: “It’s very dark around the park entrance and there have been complaints about vandalism there.

“We’re delighted to receive the grant.”

Since the Safer Communities Fund was launched in 2014, more than £2.6 million seized from criminals under the Proceeds of Crime Act has now been distributed to good causes.

PCC Mark Burns-Williamson said: “I launched the fund to help groups make a real difference in their communities.

“It has now delivered across 15 grant rounds, totalling £2,673,114, with 617 projects benefitting.”

He added that the maximum award was being upped from £5,000 to £6,000.

Applications in the next round of grants open on April 15.

Half the funding pot will be available for projects which seek to tackle drugs and alcohol misuse or focus on young people, and the remainder for schemes that address priorities in the commissioner’s Police and Crime Plan.
