A YOUNG girl from Silsden will have her head shaved next month in support of people who have cancer.

Lani Newby, 11, is doing this to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

And her hair will be donated to the Little Princess Trust, to be made into a wig for a young person undergoing cancer treatment.

Lani, a pupil at Silsden Primary, said members of her own family as well as her childminder had fallen victim to this illness.

Commenting on her decision to have her head shaved, she said: "I've been told I'm very brave for doing this. I understand it's a big deal, but there are people out there who are having cancer treatment and losing their hair who don't have the choice.

"I don't care if people tease me at school and say I look weird or silly. Maybe this will make them see things a bit differently."

An online fundraising page for her fundraising appeal has already generated well over £800.

Her mum, Sonia Harkawy, said: "The venue for the shave will be Sunnybank Social Club in Bridge Street, Silsden, on Sunday March 10 from 1pm. There will be a raffle and bake sale on the day, and everyone is welcome.

"Any individuals or businesses that may like to donate a raffle prize, can contact myself either by e-mail at soniaharkawys6@gmail.com or by calling 074327 86923."
