WORKERS at Keighley social housing group Incommunities are seeing red – and are delighted.

Employees took part in Wear Red Day to raise money for the Children's Heart Surgery Fund, based at Leeds General Infirmary.

Bucket collections coined-in over £140.

The effort was also supported by residents and staff at Farish House, an Incommunities sheltered scheme in Keighley, who raised £180 with a coffee morning.

Proceeds will go towards new equipment, resources, training and research to help children and young adults with congenital heart disease.

Support is also given to affected families.

Geraldine Howley, Incommunities' group chief executive, said: "A big 'well done' goes to Farish House residents and Incommunities staff who have pulled out all the stops to raise funds for this great cause.

"It’s been wonderful to see so many colleagues wearing red with pride.

"It is the second year running we’ve supported the unit’s life-changing work caring for both children and their families.

"With more donations coming in, we are aiming to reach the £400 mark."

Incommunities is also offering tenants the chance to brush-up on their maths and English skills.

It has places available on free weekly courses being staged at six centres across the district.

The sessions are open to anyone aged 16 and over.

Participants have the option of taking accredited qualifications.

Nicki Woods, from the group’s employability team, runs the courses.

She said: “The training is very flexible and tailored to attendees’ needs, whether that’s to help our customers with everyday tasks like working out their bills or to help get a job.

“Participants can choose from following an accredited training pathway or learning at their own pace.”

Similar classes held over the past two years have proved hugely successful, attracting around 130 people.

Among those who have taken part is Keighley man Mark Cottrell.

He learned of the initiative after attending an Incommunities job club.

“The classes are really friendly and Nicki is always on hand to give you one-to-one support,” he said.

“I do voluntary work and this training will hopefully give me the confidence to get a full-time job.”
