YOUNGSTERS at Sutton Community Primary School have shown they are top of the class when it comes to artistic talent.

They took part in a competition to design posters for the science section of the school library.

The contest was staged in conjunction with Cross Hills-based Airedale Chemical, to celebrate International School Library Month.

Winning designs were enlarged, framed and displayed in the library, and the successful pupils received WH Smith gift vouchers.

Dave Horton, a teacher at the school, said: "Our library is an invaluable resource for us and provides hours of fun, learning and quiet time for pupils throughout each year.

"When Airedale Chemical suggested a competition to celebrate this fantastic facility, we jumped at the chance.

"The pupils thoroughly enjoyed creating eye-catching posters with a science theme and for the winners to see their drawings blown-up and hung on the wall is a great boost for them."

The competition was the latest in a series of joint initiatives between the chemical manufacturer and the school.

Earlier this year, the company donated £500 worth of science books as part of its charitable arm Airedale Foundation, which supports community groups.

And pupils have visited the plant.

Daniel Marr, head of marketing at Airedale Chemical, praised the standard of entries in the poster contest.

"We were blown away by the creativity and imagination shown by the pupils," he said.

"They really took the science theme and ran with it to create some fantastic posters for their library to celebrate International School Library Month.

"It was hard to pick just three winners but the chosen designs were fantastic. Not only were they well-drawn but they expressed a real knowledge and love of science.

"Over the last couple of years we have really enjoyed our partnership with the school and competitions like this definitely help strengthen the bond between us."
