YOUNGSTERS at a Keighley school know how to enjoy thems-elves.

Pupils at Eastwood Community School celebrated Elf Day, a national initiative staged by the Alzheimer’s Society.

The children were invited to wear red and green elf-like costumes, in exchange for a donation.

More than £250 was raised.

One pupil said: “It’s so nice that we get to dress-up because it helps people who aren’t as lucky as we are.”

Headteacher, Suzanne Carter, said the children had hugely enjoyed the day.

She added: “Also, parents noted how lovely it was that staff got into the spirit and that the school supported such important charity work – not just at this time of the year, but all year round.”

The school’s backing of the Elf Day venture further builds on its involvement with dementia activities.

Pupils and staff are ‘Dementia Friends’, having undergone training in how to support people with the condition.

“The school is committed to supporting mental health and wellbeing throughout the whole curriculum,” said Mrs Carter.

Although Elf Day was officially on December 7, schools, businesses and groups can take part anytime this month.

Various fundraising options are on offer, such as wearing fancy dress, bake sales and Christmas movie nights.

A free fundraising pack has been produced.

“Elf Day is our fabulous festive fundraiser designed to get people in the Christmas spirit while raising money to help beat dementia,” said an Alzheimer’s Society spokesman.

Registration closes next Friday (December 21). For more details, visit alzheimers.org.uk/get-involved/events-and-fundraising/elf-day.
