THE many benefits of West Yorkshire’s Police Cadets scheme were outlined to Keighley town councillors at their latest meeting.
Sergeant Adam Beecroft explained how the initiative works, saying that each intake of cadets includes 25 young people aged 13 to 18.
They take a two-year course where they learn about basic policing practices, take part in voluntary community projects, go on residential camps and complete their bronze and silver Duke of Edinburgh awards.
At the end of the two years they are offered support to become police special constables.
Sgt Beecroft added: “This is taking 25 vulnerable young people off the streets, and it’s important for us as police to be able to help these kids.”
