SIR - To mis-quote Oscar Wilde: ‘One must have a heart of stone to read the latest letter from Alan Chapman ( T&A letters, May 9) without laughing’.

As with many other Tories he seeks to blame every one other than Boris Johnson and his government for the current economic crisis and the plight of about seven million families.

Perhaps he has forgotten that in 2007 financial crisis his party chose and still does blame Gordon brown and Alastair Darling rather than poorly regulated financial institutions for the near collapse of the world wide banking system.

Then as now truth is an optional extra but I fear this time for Mr Chapman and his like-minded colleagues there will be no escape and the Conservatives in general and Johnson in particular will pay a heavy price for their mismanagement.
