WHY are women’s gardening gloves so lightweight and pretty-pretty, whereas men’s are more robust and practical? There are exceptions but invariably, the fabric and design of women’s gardening gloves suggests that we do no more than deadhead a few dahlias. They are more like something a Jane Austin heroine would wear.

At the weekend I found my gloves - pictured alongside my husband’s - inadequate protection for gathering up hedge clippings, so had to use his. To all manufacturers, we are equals in the garden - we women need protection too.
