WHARFEDALE and Aireborough residents are being warned to look out for romance-focused scams.

West Yorkshire Trading Standards say that people are being left more susceptible to such scams due to the rise in online working because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The organisation is advising people to beware of:

*Notices on dating sites that lure you off to another social platform

*People they are in contact with claiming to be working overseas or in the military

*Unusually attractive profile photographs, which are usually fake and the sign of a scam

*Claims to need money for emergencies, hospital bills or plans to visit

Trading Standards is also warning residents to check any letters they receive that purport to be from local councils offering discounts.

Its latest newsletter says that such letters ‘should be addressed to you by name, not The Occupier.

“To check on any council-led schemes visit the correct council website or https://www.gov.uk/.” Scams can be reported to Action Fraud by calling 0300 123 2040.
