A RESIDENT at an Ilkley care home is walking 30 miles in September to raise money and awareness of dementia.

Susan, 79, has lived at Burley Hall Bupa Care Home for four years and will walk a total of 30 miles around the grounds of the home throughout the month of September, averaging a mile per day.

Staff and fellow residents at Burley Hall are supporting Susan, taking it in turns to walk with her as she completes her challenge.

‘Walk 30 miles for Dementia in September’ is a fundraising activity set up by national charity, Dementia UK, to ensure they have enough money to support families facing dementia.

Susan has been diagnosed with dementia, which is why raising money to support this cause is something very close to her heart.

Susan completed her first mile on September 1 and so far, has walked 11 miles.

Having set herself the goal of raising £150, Susan has now surpassed this target and is on a current total of £341.

Julie Robinson, Home Manager at Bupa’s Burley Hall, said: “Susan is such a remarkable lady and we are all behind her 100 per cent of the way.

“I am very proud of her taking part in the 30-mile walk, this is a huge undertaking and an incredible achievement, and I look forward to joining her for some of the stints.

“Living with dementia is not keeping Susan from smiling, she is a joy to be around – always up for a good chat and is a huge supporter of fellow residents as well as good causes.

“Although Susan has surpassed her fundraising target, this is just the beginning. I would like to encourage anyone who is inspired by this magnificent lady, to please donate.”
