ILKLEY Soroptimists raised £389 for women’s refuges with a sponsored 2.6 miles walk - part of the 2.6 challenge on April 26.
Twelve members took part - observing social distancing - on a route their new President Jo Thornley suggested: a scenic one through Middleton Woods and along the river bank.
As well as raising funds for refuges the Ilkley Soroptimists wanted to draw attention to the national helpline www.nationaldahelpline.org.uk which can help women suffering with an abusive relationship especially under lockdown. The club also wrote to Ilkley’s MP Robbie Moore asking him to support the second reading of the Domestic Abuse bill and press for some changes proposed by the Prison Reform Trust. The MP replied saying prior to the recent passing of the bill he would continue to examine the Bill in detail as it progresses through Parliament and would work closely with the Government to help pass the most effective legislation. Ilkley Soroptimists provide items and finance for a local refuge. For further information about the club visit: soroptimistilkley@gmail.com
