NEIGHBOURS on a quiet Guiseley street came out in force to celebrate the 75th anniversary of VE day.

The event, on Hawksworth Avenue, began with the two minute silence, and the sounding of the Last Post by Stephen Smith, who plays regularly for remembrance events. This was followed by a bagpipe rendition of Sleep Dearie, Sleep by Simon Grace.

The event was organised and photographed by resident, Lizzie Worley, who runs Luminosa Photography.

She said: “There was a great atmosphere along the entire road, with lots of flags and bunting out. People of all ages came out for the two minutes’ silence, but then stayed to join in with the community singing of We’ll Meet Again.

“Avsed (Aireborough Voluntary Services to the Elderly) had sent out leaflets suggesting that we have afternoon tea with the neighbours, and that was exactly what happened later in the afternoon. It was a real community event – many neighbours chatting to each other for the first time, sitting on deckchairs outside their houses.”
