COUNCIL waste sites across Leeds have closed following the Government’s introduction of a lockdown on movement.

Leeds City Council introduced the measure immediately following Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s announcement on Monday, March 23 of tougher new restrictions on social contact to try to tackle the coronavirus outbreak.

The authority, which provides services in Aireborough, Horsforth and parts of Wharfedale, has also responded by:

*Suspending all garden waste collections

*Closing all libraries and council-run ‘hubs’

*Advising people to stop using litter bins as they will not be emptied.

A Leeds City Council spokesperson said: “The council is reiterating the importance of following the instructions laid down by the Prime Minister in order to stop the spread of coronavirus.

“If you need to get in touch with our customer contact centre on (0113) 222 4444 please be aware that lines will be very busy and we will help as soon as we can.” Further measures may also be taken as the authority says it is ‘still processing’ the full implications’ of the Government’s announcement.
