MARIE Curie’s Aireborough Fundraising Group has marked the end of its eighth year with the announcement that it has raised a staggering £155,000.

The group would like to publicly thank the people of Yeadon, Guiseley, Rawdon and Otley whose generosity has enabled it to reach its target just eight years after it was launched.

Monies have been raised through a variety of ways – from collections in local supermarkets and garden centres, to organising race nights, fashions shows and hog roasts.

Everyone in the area also looks forward to their annual Christmas and Easter hamper raffles in local pubs and hairdressers.

Secretary of the group Sally Sumpner said: “We are fortunate that over the years we have built quite a profile in the area and benefit greatly from the generous donations of local people.

“The charity needs volunteers to work together to support the nursing service in the region and collectively we can make a positive impact in the community by helping to ensure nurses can care for more people.”

The group has plenty planned for the year head, with a coffee morning and race night, alongside annual campaigns such as the Christmas collections and the Great Daffodil Appeal.

Faye Waters, Marie Curie Community Fundraiser said: “They are an exceptional bunch of enthusiastic individuals.

“All of the members work together so well and have really embraced becoming fundraising volunteers. Many of the members have a personal connection with the charity which fuels their energy and inspires them to raise as much money as they possibly can. Their ambition is to get the whole of North West Leeds involved with Marie Curie!”

Marie Curie relies on the support of local people and is calling on more individuals to get involved so the charity can continue caring for people living with a terminal illness.
