THIS year’s Ilkley Carnival will take place on a Sunday because of a change in the May bank holiday.

The event is traditionally held on the first May bank holiday Monday - but this year the holiday has been moved to coincide with the 75th anniversary of VE day on Friday, May 8. Because of this the carnival will now be staged on Sunday May 3.

Now Ilkley Town Council will look at how the VE day anniversary will be marked in the town. At a town council meeting this week members agreed to check what various groups and organisations were planning before discussing the issue again at February’s meeting.

Mayor Cllr Mark Stidworthy said a letter had been received towards the end of last year from the Armed Forces Charity asking whether the town council had any plans to commemorate VE day. He suggested researching what other organisations were planning in the town and bringing the issue back to the February meeting to decided what to focus on in the commemoration. Victory in Europe Day commemorates the surrender of Nazi Germany in the Second World War.
