BURLEY and Woodhead CE Primary School in Burley-in-Wharfedale has been named as one of the best in the country based on its 2019 SAT results.

The Department for Education has released a league table of primary school performances which shows the results of this year’s Key Stage 2 assessments.

The national curriculum tests, known as SATs, are taken at the end of year 6 and test children on reading, writing and maths.

Burley and Woodhead saw 100 per cent of pupils reach expected levels in each category with 45 per cent of its students also achieving a ‘high score’ in reading and maths and were found to be working at a greater depth in writing.

Based on the 2019 Department of Education league tables, this puts Burley and Woodhead as the eight highest achieving school in England.

Headteacher, Joanne Siddall, said: “We’re delighted, yet again, with the fantastic results of our Year 6 pupils.

“We are incredibly proud of all that we have achieved here at Burley and Woodhead over the last few years.”

Nationally, 65 per cent of pupils met expected standards, while 11 per cent received reached a higher standard.

Just last year Burley and Woodhead CE Primary was designated as one of 34 English Hubs, supporting schools across Bradford and North Yorkshire with their phonics and early reading teaching.

Hub schools promote a love of reading and support other schools to provide excellent phonics and early language teaching.

Literacy specialists within each hub will provide tailored support to schools. It means Burley and Woodhead CE Primary School takes a leading role in supporting schools that struggle to teach children to read by improving the teaching of early language and reading.

The hub schools were chosen by the Department for Education through a competitive process. All 32 have a background of excellent phonics teaching.
