THE 44th Menston Village show took place on Saturday, September 7 at Kirkland’s Community Centre, Menston.

“The beautiful summer weather has seen over 400 contestants enter over 600 different entries. That makes this our biggest year yet” said Sue Rix, Chair of the Menston Show Committee.

There was an abundance of bread in all shapes and sizes. No soggy bottoms for the pies this year with Sue Reid winning first prize for her decorated apple pie.

It was another bumper year for the handicrafts, with handmade rabbits, crocheted lamas and stained-glass windows but an exquisite handmade wedding dress took first prize.

“The stunning surrounds of the Wharfe valley have really been showcased in the photography classes this year, with the themes of blooms, bridges and birds” said one guest.

The children’s Lego creations were out of this world, everything from elaborate fortresses, to intricate underwater scenes, with the best in class going to Isaac Eustace, aged four, for his Lego zoo. Bright and bold coloured leaf prints and rainbows dominated the children’s paintings.

Menston’s thriving community groups were the focus of the Ward Shield this year where local community groups were asked to present a tray which reflected their group. The Menston Ramblers 3D creation grabbed the judges attention and won first prize.

This year the Leslie Wood Memorial Trophy for ‘best in show’ went to D. Ascough for their perfect onions! The Barbara Hannam Trophy, for a ‘best children’s entry’ went to Elsa Baldwin, who also won the Menston Junior Photography cup. While the Fawcett Trophy for the overall winner, with most points over all classes, went to Sarah Gregory.
