AIRCRAFT enthusiast, Ken Cothliff, who lives in Yeadon, has published a new book charting the 88-year history of Leeds Bradford Airport.

Produced with the co-operation of the new owners of the airport, AMP Capital, ‘Yeadon Above and Beyond’ spans the time from when three Leeds businessmen, Ambler, Hey and Garnett came up with the idea of an airfield on Yeadon Moor, through to it becoming the UK’s fastest growing regional airport.

Included within the book is rare information on the airport’s pre-World War Two history, as well as the story of the AVRO shadow factory that played a major part in the war effort, constructing 700 Lancaster Bombers and 4000 Avro Ansons.

It also charts the extension to the runway, which opened in 1984, and the unforgettable visit by Concorde in August 1986, which attracted thousands of spectators.

Speaking about the book, Ken said: “With the ‘Northern Powerhouse’ high on the agenda with politicians and business leaders, Leeds Bradford Airport will play a major role in helping to deliver prosperity and investment in the region.

“The airport has a fascinating history from the time three ‘enthusiasts’ got together to fly planes, through to carrying more than four million passengers today.

“Although its location on top of a hill may not be the best, it has adapted to the climate challenges to play a vital part in the region’s economy.”

Published by ‘Air Supply Publishing’ the book is published in paperback and are priced at £19.99 plus postage.
