A WHARFEDALE church has featured in a hit TV show.

Weston Church and its hall were used in Gentleman Jack, the historical drama whose first season was recently broadcast on BBC One.

Based on the diaries of landowner and industrialist Anne Lister, from Halifax, the show is set in the West Yorkshire of the 1830s.

Much of the first season was shot on location at Shibden Hall and Sutton Park, but Washburn and Mid-Wharfe Benefice was also approached to see if Weston Church (All Saints) could be used for a wedding scene.

The benefice’s administrator, Hazel Pullan, said: “The film crew camped out for a couple of days last September and redressed the church for a country wedding scene, so it looked period.

“The church was adapted so that all electrical and modern fittings were removed or covered: candles were used instead of light bulbs, the carpet was rolled up and hessian used instead, and a more traditional wooden altar cross and candle sticks were used.

“The external oil tank and noticeboard were covered with greenery, too. The props crew were very good and took photographs and then reinstated everything afterwards.

“The sound crew recorded us ringing the bells and that was used in the programme.

“It was fascinating to see what was involved in creating the show, meeting the cast and ringing the bells for them.”
