NINE local primary schools made a splash at Ilkley Pool for the Jubilee Trophy Swimming Gala at Ilkley Pool.

On Tuesday, May 22 children from Ashlands, All Saints, Askwith, Ben Rhydding, Burley Oaks, Burley Woodhead, Ghyll Royd, Menston and Westville House took part in the gala, an annual event for Wharfedale schools. Coaches, teachers and parents stood on the sidelines cheering the children on as they raced their way across the 25-metre pool.

There were four swimming stroke races, a medley and a relay race for both boys and girls.

The tournament ended with the final scores being announced.

Ghyll Royd School in Burley-in-Wharfedale took home the trophy for the highest overall score. The school’s girls came in second and the boys came in third, creating an overall win.

Headteacher David Martin was there to congratulate the children as they accepted their trophy.

Mr Martin said: “Congratulations to our Form 6 children for your overall win! Your sportsmanship and the standard of swimming was enjoyed by all spectating and we are extremely proud of your achievement. Thank you to organisers at Ilkley Pool and to the organisers from Ilkley Grammar School for your efforts in creating a brilliant inter-school event! Well done to all the children who competed!”

Jane Campbell, an organiser of the annual Wharfedale Schools gala, said: “It was fantastic to have so many schools competing, with all the children trying so hard. It was extremely noisy as everyone was cheering so much! Well done to Ghyll Royd and all the teams who took part”.
