SUPPORT for a Business Improvement District in Ilkley is gathering momentum as the development board and manager continue to meet face to face with business owners to discuss the project.

Emma Lishman, general manager at Lishman’s of Ilkley and vice-chair of the BID Development Board said: “People are hearing rumours about what the BID is and the fact that there is a cost implication.

“Many business owners have understood the concept immediately and can see the relatively small cost they will incur will bring positive results. Others are initially sceptical until they have had a proper conversation with one of us, then most people agree what a great opportunity this is for us all.”

Steven Charlesworth owner of Ilkley-based bakery and retailer The Loafer said: “We are a small independent business and we work hard to have a strong customer base in the town. Ilkley has a very different offering to its neighbouring towns however we are treated as one in a very long list. I am aware of the town’s strong tourist offering and local loyalty, but I want to see the town benefit from this directly and also make decisions that will positively impact us as a town centre. I believe Ilkley BID will give Ilkley businesses a voice.”

Tim Tennant from The Art Shop based on Hawksworth Street added: “There are peaks and troughs in trading across the year, influenced by many different factors including tourism and the education and seasonal calendar. We need an organisation which is aware of all the high street challenges and will work with us to create an inviting and attractive town centre which in turn will maximise footfall and visitor stay and spend.

“I have another shop in a town with an active BID so this is an easy decision for me as I’ve seen the benefits first hand.”

The BID business plan is being launched at an event to be held at The Ticket Office on Tuesday, January 29 from 5.30pm-6.30pm.

Potential levy payers, who will have received information sheets about the consultation process, are invited to register via Eventbrite – search Ilkley Business Improvement District.
