ILKLEY Pool, is soon to re-open following extensive refurbishments which have been taking place over the summer months.

Work on the roof at the pool, located on Denton Road, began in July and was estimated to take up to ten weeks to complete. However, once contractors started work on site by lifting the roof, only then did they become aware of the extent of damage and the work that was required.

The pool opened in 1974 and so it is the first time since it opening that work of this nature has been needed. There has been an extensive work programme of repairs carried out including the replacement of the whole roof.

Councillor Sarah Ferriby, Portfolio Holder for Healthy People and Places said: “The Swimming Pool has been operating as it is for 44 years so it was crucial these works were carried out and to a standard that is safe for those visiting. It is a popular leisure facility and we are pleased that it will soon re-open for the public to enjoy once again.”

During the closure of the pool the Lido has remained opened throughout and the warm weather over the summer has seen up to 44,000 people visit the Lido this year. Keeping the Lido open through to October allowed some continuity of swimming for those who wanted to swim outdoors, but it is now closed as temperatures have dropped five degrees.

The swimming pool is expected to open in the first week of December.
