SHOCKING footage has emerged showing a reckless motorbike rider running a red light and almost causing a potentially serious collision at a busy city centre junction.

The video, taken on Wednesday, April 18, shows a dirt bike being ridden by two people – only one of whom is wearing a crash helmet – being driven across a junction in the city centre at 12.26pm.

The dashcam video captures the bike coming from Senior Way and running a red light, before passing in front of moving vehicles driving up Manchester Road out of the city centre, and heading away down Croft Street.

The bike narrowly avoids a collision with a white van and a red saloon car, both of which have to perform an emergency stop.

As both cars slam on their brakes, the bike can be seen swerving away from the oncoming traffic to avoid being hit.

The bike then overtakes a learner driver in Croft Street’s right-turn-only lane, before cutting across the front of the car and speeding away up Croft Street weaving between traffic.

While the rider of the off-road bike is wearing a motocross style helmet, with a visor and goggles, the passenger is riding without a helmet, and neither of the riders are wearing any protective clothing, on top of their T-shirts. The bike also has no registration plates.

Sergeant Cameron Buchan, the officer responsible for leading Operation Steerside, West Yorkshire Police’s crackdown on road safety across the Bradford district, said the pair were showing a “blatant ignorance of the potential dangers” they were putting themselves and other road users in.

He said: “There is a complete disregard for their safety, especially the pillion passenger.

“Their actions are putting random innocent motorists at risk. It could have led to an incredibly tragic situation. These people are risking their lives for a moment’s thrill without any forethought.

“Bradford has an anti-social bike team, separate from Operation Steerside, which is dedicated to tackling this kind of incident.”

A spokesperson for Brake, the road safety charity, said: “This footage is incredibly concerning – the off-road motorbike rider and their passenger clearly have no regard for their own safety, or that of those around them.

“Not to mention that they are also showing complete disregard for the law by riding the bike without any licence plates and without a helmet for the passenger.

“The rider’s dangerous behaviour could have had potentially devastating consequences not only for themselves but all other road users and pedestrians. Thanks to technology, we now have permanent evidence of this dangerous behaviour, and we hope that the police trace the culprit and make an example of them.”
