A MAN who drowned in a reservoir was on his way home with a companion when he stopped off for a dip.

Alan Rasoul, 27, from Blackpool, died in Ponden Reservoir, on Scar Top Road, near Haworth, on June 15 this year.

An inquest into his death opened this morning at Bradford Coroners' Court.

Crispin Oliver, Assistant Coroner for the West Yorkshire and Yorkshire area, opened the inquest and confirmed Mr Rasoul's date of birth and that he was originally born in Kurdistan.

He outlined that Mr Rasoul was pronounced dead at 10.18pm on June 15 at Ponden Reservoir.

The coroner's court heard that a post-mortem by a Dr Knight confirmed that Mr Rasoul died by drowning - submersion in water.

Joanne Marsden, Coroners Officer for West Yorkshire West, said: "Mr Rahoul was travelling home when he and his companion stopped off at Ponden Reservoir, went into the water and got into difficulty.

"Unfortunately he went under and did not return."

She added that the emergency services were called shortly after.

Mr Oliver outlined that any remaining evidence for the inquest would need to be submitted by July 22, with the matter reviewed by August 6.

He said the aim is conclude the inquest on September 16.
